Fundamentals of mountain bike leadership is British Cycling’s newest entry level Leadership award and the entry point for aspiring mountain bike leaders.

A new, accessible mountain bike leadership course where leadership principles take centre stage. This 2 day training and assessment course has been developed by experts from the outdoor industry to enable you to lead groups of children, young people and adults in easy to moderate off-road environments.

This award is ideal for anyone who either works in the outdoor sector, volunteers at a club or has a personal interest in gaining additional mountain bike skills.

Course overview

The Fundamentals of Mountain Bike Leadership Award is a new, accessible mountain bike leadership course where leadership principles take centre stage. This Btitish Cycling course has been developed by experts from the outdoor industry to enable you to lead groups of children, young people and adults in easy to moderate off-road environments

As a new leader, beginning your mountain bike leadership journey, this award will enable you to gain the tools and understanding to become a good safe leader. This course develops your skills in preparing for led rides, route planning, simple trailside repairs and managing accidents and emergencies all underpinned by transformational leadership techniques.

Developed in partnership between British Cycling and experts in the outdoor adventure leadership industry, this course is ideal for anyone who wants to lead groups using mixed road and off road environments from urban fringe and gravel tracks to open countryside, woodland and up to most trail centre blue routes.  Schools and colleges, activity centres, groups, clubs, or those looking to being their mountain bike leadership journey whether paid or voluntary – this is your award!

The Fundamentals of Mountain Bike Leadership Award can be used as a stand alone qualification, or as the optional first rung on the Mountain Bike Leadership Award pathway.

Course content

What does the course include?

  • 3-4 hours of  e-learning via British Cycling Learning
  • 16 hours training and assessment combined course

What do I need to be able to register

  • The minimum age to attend a course is 17 years old in England and Wales. You will only be able to lead independently once aged 18 in England and Wales.
  • You must be able to ride a mountain bike (or another appropriate bike for the terrain) comfortably on roads with some traffic, off-road and mountain bike trails up to blue grade.  Be regularly riding and have an appropriate level of fitness
  • £30 registration to British Cycling. This will give you access to your pre course online learning
  • Complete a logbook to evidence your recent rides. We recommend a minimum of ten rides of at least 1 hour and five rides of at least 2.5 hours duration (inclusive alternatives are available by request) over the last six months.  We have a downloadable Logbook that can be saved electronically or printed if needed.

What else do I need to do to achieve the Award?

In order for your award to be accredited in addition to successful completion of your Fundamentals of Mountain Bike Leadership, you are required to:

  • attend and evidence a two-day Outdoor First Aid course
  • undergo and evidence safeguarding training. You will be enrolled on an online course when you register with the Leadership scheme

These can occur after your Fundamentals of Mountain Bike Leadership course, but your award will only be provided on receipt and acceptance of these.
